game of thrones king's landing

If you are a fan of Game of Thrones (and if you’re not you’re missing out) we have made a list of the top filming locations used in the series so far. Take a look at the locations below and start planning your very own trip to Westeros.

As the HBO production is based in Northern Ireland, the majority of the filming took place here. The first two seasons were filmed around Belfast, and you can either take an official guided tour or plan your own road trip.

If you want to see the Iron Islands, visit Pyke and Ballintoy Harbour. Ballintoy Harbour was the location where Theon Greyjoy first arrived after spending ten years in Winterfell.

If you want to retrace your steps through the series, head to Antrim Plateau where you can stand in the same spot where Ned Stark beheaded the deserter from the Night Watch. You can also visit the iconic Mussendun Temple, as the beach below is where Melisandre burned the Seven Idols of Westeros.

Other locations include Larrybane where Renly pledges to Lady Stark that he will avenge Ned’s death, Dunseverick where Renly first encounters Melisandre, the caves of Cushendun where Melisandre gives birth to a shadow child, and the dark hedges of Armoy used in the first episode of series 2.

If you are a bannermen of the Starks and a true Northman, you will want to take a trip to Winterfell. The main location for Winterfell is Castle Ward, an 18th Century castle in County Down.

Iceland is also a major filming location for the show, and the primary setting for The Wall. You can go on a guided tour that includes the Vatnajokull glacier, Snaefellsjokull glacier and Lake Myvatn, and visit the spot where the Night Watch men were attacked by the White Walkers, and follow the route that Jon Snow and Ygritte took to reach the Wall.

Now its time to head south down the Kings road to King’s Landing. Originally, Kings Landing was shot in Malta during the first series, but due to damage to protected land caused by a subcontractor, the location was moved to Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum. The Min eta, Bokar, and Lovrijenac fortresses and the Old Town entrance gates were used during filming.

Daenerys Targaryen is fast becoming a favourite character for many GoT fans. If you want to visit Astapor to see where she and her Dragons acquired an army, go to Essaouira in Morocco.

Filming for the fourth series filming will return to Northern Ireland, Dubrovnik, Croatia and Iceland, and Croatia.

Who loves Game Of Thrones? Hmmm? Yes, yes, I see you all there. Stop pushing and shoving, come on now, you don’t want to injure yourself. Also, please refrain from clawing desperately at screen at the mention of Series 4 or The Winds of Winter; or both! I can relate myself to all of you, all you lovely devotees, because I simply adore Game of Thrones.

Furthermore, I live in Northern Ireland, so close to the set and I’ve been to many of the filming locations and let me tell you, it is just heartwarming seeing the Mourne Mountains in such a big TV series. Anyway, I’m here to tell you about some theories which I’ve heard being thrown around the community and fan-base of this series. Whether it’s the TV show or the books, I thrive in the conditions of intertwining theories and possible outcomes which simply put butterflies in my stomach. This may give you the impression that I am too… engrossed in the adventures of the many houses of Westeros but I don’t care, I love it all. Anyway, let’s get started.

WARNING – Spoilers. While the first two theories require some knowledge of the series (Up to and including the third series or A Storm Of Swords: Steel and Snow just to be safe), the last three are my favourite and require a more in depth knowledge of the series only available in the books so far. So I warn you, don’t read numbers 3, 2 or 1 as that would be devastating to those who read it. Number one is quite amusing though, a little revenge for the North. Also, this is my opinion and I do not mean to disagree with yours.

Another WARNING (Well, more of an alert)-I may get a little in depth and will try to explain anything that is not understood. If I get too engrossed, stop me. Ok? Right then.

Game Of Thrones

Much can be said about the gravitas that the Game of Thrones cast continues to bring to the series. We’ve seen these characters evolve throughout the last three seasons and we have become incredibly invested in their respective paths. While it is quite safe to assume that characters like Tyrion, Jon Snow and possibly Stannis (who now heads North) are set to have a more definitive role this season, we can also make the assumption that characters falling under House Stark, House Lannister and other major houses (as well as the events across the Narrow Sea) are also bound to feature quite prominently.

I’m sure some central plots will take a backseat to more pivotal events this time around but I am really hoping to see a whole lot more of certain individuals, some of whom were introduced as early as last season, and how their increasing role will impact the narrative of this upcoming season. Here’s a list of those I haven’t seen enough of, those I can’t seem to get enough of and those who I simply hope will continue to stir things up in Westeros.

Nudity on HBO is an almost inevitable thing. The general rule for it seems to be just because we can, we will. But in a well respected show like Game of Thrones which is more plot-heavy and full of rich characters more so than some other things on cable, it can seem a little out of place when in the middle of an intense episode about political drama and brilliant character development there comes a largely needless sex scene out of nowhere.

This is not to say that nude scenes or sex scenes are always unnecessary but here are at least ten cases where the time Game of Thrones spent hitting its nudity quota could have been better used for basically anything else.

10. Theon And The Woman With The Weird Boobs

I actually want to give this scene credit as it is a scene in the second book and they really brought the character of the plain-looking woman Theon has sex with on a boat to life. Very good casting.

Casting aside, the show runners seemed to have had weird priorities in terms of adapting this chapter. They spent longer on this casual sex scene than they did on Theon’s sister Yara not announcing herself to be so leading to an awkward but perversely comical chapter of Theon hitting on her and her not doing as much to stop it as she probably could have. This was shrunk down to a brief scene of him reaching down her pants while they were riding a horse.

A real shame given that the time they spent on Theon having sex with the woman with the weird boobs could have been developing Asha/Yara as a character or adding a bit more of Game of Thrones favorite plot point- incest.

This season of Game of Thrones has been quite hectic, but we were there every step of the way. And now, as we try to face the reality of another year until a new season of Game of Thrones, there is still much to be done and much to explore.

Now, being a fan of Game of Thrones entails a certain amount of heartbreak no matter what. When Ned Stark’s head came off in Season 1, it was clear that anybody, anybody was fair game. That fact has only become starker as one beloved character after another has fallen. This has made a lot of fans want to swear off the show entirely, but I’m here to tell you why you shouldn’t.

It wouldn’t be Westeros without the death, but there’s also a little bit of good, or at least entertaining, that comes along with it. Join me as we look forward to Top 5 great things to expect next season…

*This is an article about a future season, so obviously there will be spoilers.

Also, Honorable Mention: Coldhands, who I really thought would be the final reveal of this season. He is the character that will help Bran and company journey beyond the wall and lead the way. He will kill all the men responsible for the Mutiny at Craster’s Keep. His face has never been seen, only his hands, and they’re pure black. Rumours abound to what or who he actually is, and while he certainly is epic, so are most people in Game of Thrones.
