It’s that time of year again. The January transfer window is open for business and all 20 Premier League sides are looking to strengthen.

As with every season motives are different. Some clubs are trying to stave off relegation, others advance their lot by pushing for Europe. The title race and four Champions League spot remain as wide open as they have in years at the top.

Some managers are known to dislike the winter window, but love it or hate it only the brave or foolish ignore it. Certain teams desperately require strengthening to realize their ambitions and others need to have a quiet month, ensuring they hang on to their prized assets.

Players seeking moves may have extra motivation to do so this January as we are now in a World Cup year. Competition to make the plane to Brazil will be cut-throat for many of the 32 countries involved in the greatest sporting show on earth.

National coaches want their players getting regular football in the run-up to the World Cup. That can cause crazy winter gambles by outsiders to force their way back into the fold in time for June.

All these considerations have been weighed up by the WhatCulture sports team. So, for your delectation we have gone through all 20 English top flight teams, assessed what they need, who they have been linked with and who we would like see join them. We proceed alphabetically, so click next to start with Arsenal.

Can Chelsea draw level with Schalke at the top of Group E of the Champions League?

Team News

Schalke will be without a number of high profile players as they prepare to welcome Chelsea to the Veltins Arena for their Champions League Group E clash.

The German side will be without star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as well as winger Jefferson Farfan, however, midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has returned from a knee injury.

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has not made the trip to Germany after failing to recover from a rib injury.

However, former Bayer Leverkusen attacker Andre Schurrle has travelled as part of a 21-man group.

Key Stats

Schalke are unbeaten in their last 13 Champions League games in the group stages (9 wins, 4 draws).

Chelsea have only won one of their seven away Champions League games in Germany (including the 2012 final v Bayern Munich). It was against Vfb Stuttgart in February 2004 (1-0).

Chelsea have only failed to score once in their last 22 Champions League games, against Juventus in November 2012 (0-3).

Schalke have won their two opening games for the first time in a Champions League campaign and are three points above Chelsea in Group E.

Chelsea will be hoping for more success in Germany when they return to the country for the first time since their Champions League win over Bayern Munich to face Schalke tonight.

The Blues have had an indifferent European campaign thus far – defeat against Basel and a win against Steaua Bucharest has left them third in Group E and any hope of qualifying for the knock out stages as winners could vanish tonight.

Schalke will know a win at home would virtually guarantee them safe passage through to the latter stages of the competition but they will have to do so without several key players, most notably Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

The striker will be a huge miss for the Germans tonight, as will winger Jefferson Farfan.

However, coach Jens Keller says his side have nothing to fear.

“Just a glance at Group E, as well as our recent results in the Bundesliga, give us self-confidence.

“We’re at home and Chelsea are going to feel that from the very first minute.”

After a quiet day so far at Chelsea, one source has some big activity brewing at Stamford Bridge, following an outbound move for Victor Moses – on loan to Liverpool – and the expected departure of Demba Ba on loan, with a big-money double swoop in the offing to bring two internationals in to the club.

SportsDirectNews are reporting that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is looking to test Zenit St Petersburg’s resolve with a late 40 million bid for the 27-year-old. The Russian side do not want to sell – which perhaps explain the 10m loan fee that they apparently quoted Tottenham earlier – but Hulk would be more keen on a move to the Premier League going through.

Mourinho is looking to boost his attacking options, having already signed Samuel Eto’o, and though he rates Romelu Lukaku, he sees the Belgian as a big one for the future.

The same source is suggesting that Real Madrid midfielder Samir Khedira is also at the top of Jose Mourinho’s shopping list. After a heavy summer of spending – most of it on Gareth Bale, Isco and Asier Illarramendi – Madrid are looking to offload more of their squad players to ease the competition.

Mesut Ozil already looks on his way out, and Kaka has rejoined AC Milan, and now Khedira is said to be available, with Mourinho set to make a last gasp move before the window closes. Mourinho signed the German player from VfB Stuttgart in 2010, and could add Khedira and Hulk to his new signings, Andre Schurrle, Willian, Samuel Eto’o and Marco van Ginkel this summer.

And to top off those two deals, SportsDirectNews are also reporting that Spanish striker Fernando Torres will be made available for transfer if Chelsea can bring in a replacement before 11pm. They say that Mourinho isn’t a big fan of the 29-year-old, and that Atletico Madrid could make a last ditch bid to sign their former player to line him up with new signing David Villa.

Rooney

Wayne Rooney wants to quit Manchester United, in spite of public assurances from manager David Moyes he is not for sale, according to the Daily Star.

Chelsea believe they are in pole position to land the 25 million-rated striker if he decides to leave Old Trafford this summer after almost a decade at the club.

United manager Moyes said earlier this week he had met the 27-year-old “three of four times” to thrash out his future, and also stressed that the 240,000-a-week marksman is not for sale.

However, speculation over Rooney’s future goes on as, crucially, the Scotsman failed to mention specifically if the player is happy at the club and still wants to stay.

Moyes was expected to use the club’s three-week pre-season tour of Asia and Australia to hold more talks with the ex-Everton star, but it was revealed last night that Rooney would be flying home after suffering a hamstring injury.

A statement said:

“Following a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it has been decided Wayne Rooney should return home for further assessment and rehabilitation.”

He has been ruled out for a month and will sit out United’s season-curtain raiser against Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield on August 11, the season opener against Swansea six days later as well as England’s friendly against Scotland, which is sandwiched between those two fixtures.

Chelsea were confident they could land Rooney when speculation about his unhappiness in Manchester first surfaced. The Blues will however have to compete with Arsenal if the striker becomes available, with their London rivals also interested.

Demba Ba

Aston Villa have identified Chelsea’s Demba Ba as the replacement for Christian Benteke this summer, according to the Daily Star.

Villa look set to lose Benteke just one year after signing him from Genk, after he handed in a transfer request earlier this week.

The Midlands club will now listen to offers starting from 25 million, with Tottenham thought to be favourites for the 22-year-old’s signature.

With that in mind, Villa have already stepped up their pursuits for a replacement, and have been trailing Ba, who is available for just 7 million after joining the Blues in the January transfer window from Newcastle.

The former Magpies ace does not factor into new manager Jose Mourinho’s plans at Stamford Bridge and will be allowed to call time on his short stay in West London.

While Villa could afford the transfer fee, the Senegalese striker’s wage demands could be an issue, according to the same report.

The 28-year-old is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and despite fears about his record for knee injuries, Newcastle took a chance on him and he scored 29 goals at St James’ Park.

Intriguingly, Chelsea, who are also interested in Benteke, could offer Ba-plus-cash for the highly-rated Belgian international, but Mourinho is thought to have other transfer targets further up his wishlist, such as Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

Benteke also knows he would likely get more playing time at White Hart Lane than at Stamford Bridge and, with a World Cup year coming up, that could prove crucial when he decides on his next career move.

Whatever happens, Villa have told the player they are not prepared to be messed about this summer – and Lambert has warned the starlet that any business must be concluded by the start of next month or all bets are off.

Benteke has not travelled to Germany with the rest of the squad as they begin their three-game tour of the country.
