Wigan Athletic have signed Nick Powell on a season-long loan from Manchester United, according to the BBC.

Wigan owner Dave Whelan confirmed the deal, saying:

“We obviously had Tom Cleverley on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, so it’s good news that we’ve got the lad.

The 19-year-old joined United from Crewe Alexandra in 2012 but made just two Premier League appearances for the club, and saw two more appearances in the Capital One Cup and Champions League later in the campaign.

Powell becomes the Latic’s eleventh summer arrival in what has been a busy transfer period for new manager Owen Coyle.

The same however cannot be said of United, who are still awaiting their first big signing as the transfer window ticks toward its final hour.

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini as well as Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, but so far, neither player has joined the Old Trafford club.

Fellaini has handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through the move, however, and could still sign for United before the 23:00 BST deadline.

Meanwhile, Herrera is also thought to be close to joining, with reports that David Moyes’s side are willing to activate his 30 million release clause.

Do you think United are right to send Powell out on loan? Will they land Fellaini and/or Herrera? Let us know in the comment section, below.

It’s that time of year again. The January transfer window is open for business and all 20 Premier League sides are looking to strengthen.

As with every season motives are different. Some clubs are trying to stave off relegation, others advance their lot by pushing for Europe. The title race and four Champions League spot remain as wide open as they have in years at the top.

Some managers are known to dislike the winter window, but love it or hate it only the brave or foolish ignore it. Certain teams desperately require strengthening to realize their ambitions and others need to have a quiet month, ensuring they hang on to their prized assets.

Players seeking moves may have extra motivation to do so this January as we are now in a World Cup year. Competition to make the plane to Brazil will be cut-throat for many of the 32 countries involved in the greatest sporting show on earth.

National coaches want their players getting regular football in the run-up to the World Cup. That can cause crazy winter gambles by outsiders to force their way back into the fold in time for June.

All these considerations have been weighed up by the WhatCulture sports team. So, for your delectation we have gone through all 20 English top flight teams, assessed what they need, who they have been linked with and who we would like see join them. We proceed alphabetically, so click next to start with Arsenal.

Arsenal are lining up a sensational New Year bid for Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners are weighing up a move for the Mexican striker, over concerns about Oliver Giroud’s workload.

Giroud is Arsenal’s only fit senior striker with Lukas Podolski still out injured, and manager Arsene Wenger is eager to bring in a new recruit to ease the Frenchman’s goalscoring burden.

Liverpool’s Luis Suarez remains a target, but, in news that will almost certainly heighten hostilities just two days before their clash in the Premier League, the Gunners are also eyeing United’s ‘Chicharito’.

Wenger will try to sign a new forward in January and considers the potential procurement of Hernandez’s services realistic, given how little game time he has been getting at Old Trafford recently.

Hernandez has yet to make a full league appearance for the Red Devils this season and has had to settle with being an impact substitute under manager David Moyes.

Arsenal also retain an interest in taking Juventus’s Fernando Llorente on a short-term loan, due to fears that Giroud is overexerting himself.

Giroud has started all 10 of the Gunner’s Premier League games this season, and also all four of their Champions League matches, raising concerns of burn-out.

David Moyes has endured a difficult start to his reign as manager of Manchester United. With his side struggling for form in the Premier League, the Champions League has become a welcome distraction for the new boss. The latest betting tips from Coral News see the Reds as favourites at 4/7 to take the 3 points, whilst their opponents stand at 11/2 to cause an upset.

United have started Europe’s premier club competition well, defeating Bayer Leverkusen at home and picking up a valuable draw away to Shakhtar Donestk.

The visit of Real Sociedad to Old Trafford this evening should provide Moyes with his second win of the group stage. The Spanish side have struggled to rekindle their form of last season, which saw them finishing fourth in La Liga.

However, United must be wary of complacency as Sociedad have the ability to topple the English giants.

In this post, WhatCulture looks at three danger men who Moyes and Manchester United must beware if they are to defeat the Spanish visitors.

3. Xabi Prieto

The 30-year-old midfielder is the captain and heartbeat of this Real Sociedad team. Prieto was instrumental in his side’s end of season run which saw them secure Champions League football.

Blessed with nibble footwork and expert delivery, Prieto has earned a reputation in Spain as being one of La Liga’s unsung heroes.

Having played for Sociedad for the whole of his career, Prieto is a fans’ favourite. He is adored for his loyalty to the club, especially as he is good enough to play for a bigger side.

The Spaniard’s finest performance came last season, when he netted a hat-trick against Real Madrid. Although Sociedad would go on to lose 4-3, Prieto produced a display worthy of winning any match.

Sociedad’s skipper is a penalty expert and also possesses lethal accuracy from free kicks, meaning United must be wary of tackles in and around the box.

Prieto faces a late fitness test to ensure he can make the encounter tonight. Sociedad will undoubtedly be praying that their captain is able to lead them out.

Mesut Ozil

Manchester United have sensationally joined the race to sign Real Madrid’s German international midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to Sky Sources.

Arsenal were widely reported earlier on transfer deadline day to have made a club record bid of around 42.5 million for Ozil, which had been accepted by the Spanish giants. The Gunners were said to be in advanced talks to sign Ozil following Gareth Bale’s world record move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid was completed last night.

The twist in the tale according to Sky Sports News is that David Moyes, who has been rebuffed in his attempts to sign an attacking midfielder replacement for the retired Paul Scholes after every corner (multiple bids made for Barca’s Cesc Fabregas and Everton’s Mathieu Flamini all turned down, Thiago himself looked close to join Old Trafford before being lured to Bayern Munich by his old boss Pep Guardiola and then most recently a bid for Ander Herrera rejected by Athletic Bilbao), has now turned his attention to a player Sir. Alex Ferguson was first interested in after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Sky Sports News claim Ozil’s representatives are now in talks with the Red Devils over a move to Manchester United, which must be completed before the 11pm transfer window shuts tonight.

After some impressive performances at that tournament, Ozil made the move from Werder Bremen to Real Madrid in the summer of 2010 and has now made over 155 appearances for the Bernabeu club. But with competition for places looking extremely strong following the signing of Bale and with World Cup places to fight for ahead of the tournament in Brazil next summer, Ozil must now consider his options after strong interest from the Premier League.

After a deathly quiet summer of inactivity in the transfer market, it seems that David Moyes’ side have sprung into life, with mooted moves for Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, and according to two Spanish football experts, we can now add a third attacking midfielder’s name to that list.

According to the BBC’s Spanish football writer Andy West, as well as Guillem Balague from Sky Sports, United have made a massive bid for Real Madrid’s German international midfielder Samir Khedira.

West has reported that Spanish radio station Cadena Cope are claiming that Manchester United have made a bid of 40m for Khedira and that the bid was rejected by Real Madrid.

Guillem Balague spoke to Sky Sports News on air to suggest that the deal would not go through, as Real Madrid asked manager Carlo Ancelotti about the player, and were told that the manager wanted to keep hold of the player beyond the transfer window, scuppering any hopes United had of buying him.

West also spoke about the potential deal for Ander Herrera, suggesting that the deal might be held up by tax payments that would be triggered if United meet the 36m buy-out clause for the Athletic Bilbao midfielder. That deal could go through, with Balague suggesting that it could actually go as long as midnight, beyond the end of the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports also say that Marouane Fellaini has officially entered a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to United before 11pm.
